At the polling report website, I found an interesting chart. It points out that 31% of the people think of themselves as Republicans, 31% Democrats, and 31% Independents. (6% are listed as other.)

It's the first time since 1981 that the population of Republicans has equalled that of Democrats. Compared to 2000, the difference has closed from 6% to be even.

It'll be interesting to see how shifts like this influence the election.
