Surprise Language

Inside a press release about a statistical language translation system, the following lines appear:

Och's ability to work quickly was tested recently in June, 2003, when researchers all over the country (and in England) raced in a "Surprise Language" exercise sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to create machine translation tools to deal with texts in Hindi.

This, and experiments like it, strikes me as a useful capability to have. In the future, we won't know what the threats will be, and it's going to be important that we're able to rapidly develop the ability to respond to them.
