(Via Slashdot) Java 1.5 will have generics.

I can't help but think that this is in response to C#, and that's not a bad thing. Competition is a good thing, and now that there are two popular garbage collected object oriented programming languages, both backed by corporations, I think that features will be added at a faster rate. (This is the biggest change in Java since 1.1 added inner classes, and perhaps even bigger than that.)

While there is a danger that the increased competition will lead to ill-conceived features, I think that the fact that the two languages will compete on the basis of usability will mostly keep that to a minimum.
